Art Class Preparation

What to Bring

Read and review ALL requirements prior to the class.
Even though a requirement may be identified as one to be done in class, Scouts are still expected to familiarize, review, and prepare for the requirement – BE PREPARED!

Active interaction/participation is expected and mandatory.

Share in your own words – avoid reading your answers.

Pay attention to the action verbs in the requirements.

Bring proof of completion, even partially completed work.

Whether online or in-person, please note that the requirement is being interpretted as one single subject is to be used for all four art renderings.

IN-PERSON CLASS: The majority of class time will spent working on the four different renderings - Scouts may start ahead of time but acceptance of work is at the discretion of the merit badge counselor.

ONLINE CLASS: Scouts will need to do their renderings prior to the class and have them ready to share during the class.

This requirement must be done outside of the class and may be done prior to or after the class.

Scouts may work on this requirement prior to the class, but please note that the counselor reserves the right to accept or deny your work on the basis of meeting the expectations of this requirement to their satisfaction.

Scouts should bring proof (a note signed by the host, your parent, teacher, Scoutmaster, or other) to help validate their completion of the visit noted in this requirement. Ideally the note could/should be signed by someone from the museum, gallery, exhibit, or workshop you visited. Pictures and items from your visit are an ideal way to capture this experience and will help enhance your presentation and discussion with the counselor and other Scouts in the class.

Scouts not having done preparation work on this requirement will have an opportunity to review options with the counselor to pursue after the class.

  1. Your BSA ID# and / or your Merit Badge Blue Card properly filled out and signed off by your Scout Leader.
  2. Notes and questions from reading the Art Merit Badge Pamphlet.
  3. Wear your Scout Uniform.
  4. Scouts should consider bringing a smock or an old shirt for in-class project work.
  5. Supporting documentation or project work pertinent to this merit badge, which may also include a Merit Badge Workbook for reference with notes.
  6. A positive Scouting focus and attitude.
Merit Badge Workbooks are a tool to aid Scouts with their work preparation. BSA discourages — but does not ban — the use of any merit badge worksheets or workbooks. Merit badge counselors must NEVER require the use of merit badge worksheets or workbooks and may if they choose, refuse to accept them. Scouts shall not be required to use ANY of these to complete a merit badge.
